NEET 2024 Exam Pattern

The undergraduate pre-medical (NEET-UG) entrance test is administered through pen and paper by the National Testing Agency (NTA) of India to all applicants for medical school in India and abroad. Additionally, they have the power to outline the exam format in their official NEET-UG brochure.
On May 7, 2024, the NEET-UG will be held. The paper covers the following four topics:

  • Physics (50 Questions, 180 Marks)
  • Chemistry (50 Questions, 180 Marks)
  • Botany (50 Questions, 180 Marks)
  • Zoology (50 Questions, 180 Marks)

Each subject is divided into 2 sections, Section A and Section B. Candidates are required to answer 180 questions from the 200 multiple choice questions.

  • 4 Marks will be awarded for every correct answer,
  • -1 will be deducted for every incorrect answer and
  • Zero (0) marks for unattempted questions.
The NEET-UG examination is an offline, pen & paper-based test, conducted in 13 different languages including English and Hindi.
They are further divided into two sections – Section A & Section B both comprising MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) with negative marking.
Candidates appearing for the NEET-UG examination must understand the paper pattern thoroughly and prepare accordingly to score good marks.

NEET-UG Question Distribution

The NEET-UG 2023 exam paper comprises a total of 200 questions from three subjects – Physics, Chemistry and Biology, out of which candidates need to answer only 180 questions. Furthermore, each section is divided into two sub-sections – Section A & Section B. The table below illustrates the breakdown of the question paper by section.

  • Section A of each subject comprises 35 questions. All are compulsory to answer.
  • Section B of each subject comprises 15 questions, out of these, candidates have to answer only 10 questions.
  • Candidates are advised to read all the 15 questions of section B of each subject carefully before answering. If a candidate attempts more than 10 questions, only the first 10 questions answered by the candidate will be considered.

NEET-UG Marking Scheme

There are four possible answers for each Multiple Choice exam (MCQ) in the NEET-UG exam papers. Each question is worth four points, and there will be deducted points for each incorrect response. View the chart below to learn more about the NEET 2023 scoring system.

  • Each right response will receive (+4) four marks.
  • The total will be reduced by (-1) one mark for each inaccurate or erroneous response.
    For questions that are not attempted or answered, no points will be removed.
  • When a candidate checks out two or more alternatives on the OMR sheet, the answer is deemed incorrect, and one mark is subtracted (-1).
  • Only the candidates who marked one of the correct options will receive the (+4) four marks in the event that more than one option is determined to be accurate.
  • Only the candidates who attempted the question will receive the (+4) four marks if all four of the answers are determined to be accurate.
  • All candidates who have attended will receive four marks (+4) for section A, whether or not the question was attempted, if none of the options are determined to be accurate, a question is determined to be erroneous, or a question is dropped.
  • All test takers who attempted a question that was later determined to be erroneous or dropped will receive four marks (+4) for section B.

NEET-UG Languages/ Medium of Exam

The NEET 2023 exam will be administered in 13 languages, including English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu, at various testing locations.

  • When completing the NEET registration form, the question’s medium and language should be selected. The choice cannot be changed once it has been made.
  • Candidates who select English will only receive an English-language test booklet.
  • A bilingual test booklet in both English and the candidate’s selected language—whether it be Hindi or another—will be provided.
  • The NEET question paper’s English translation will be taken as the final word if there is any ambiguity in the translation of any questions.

NEET-UG Duration

The duration of the NEET 2023 exam is 3 hours and 20 minutes (200 minutes). Candidates are advised to prepare their exam strategy according to the prescribed time limit.

NEET-UG OMR Filling Instructions

  • Only a ballpoint pen may be used to mark up the OMR sheet with each response.
  • It is not allowed to change the answers on the OMR sheet.
  • Any information printed on the OMR page that is deleted or obscured is a criminal violation.
  • On the attached test booklet, you should make some rough edits.
  • The specified test booklet code must be entered on the OMR sheet by the candidate.
